Potash alum is the white colored crystalline organic mineral salt (double sulfate) of potassium.
Potassium alum is distinct chemical compound that is a part of a type of alum
chemical compounds. The name alum represents several double sulfates with the
general formula of ( SO4 )3•24H2O plus an additional ingredient , such as
potassium , which results in potassium alum : K2SO4∙Al2( SO4 )3∙24H2O .
Potassium alum, and alums alike, crystallize in routine octahedral. It is
soluble in water, and when heated it liquefies; and if the heating is continued,
an unstructured powder will remain. Basically, potassium alum crystal is without
color as well as glassy (vitreous), and in its top-notch form is entirely
translucent with little fractures. Potassium alum has been a preferred natural
mineral salt for many years due to its abilities to properly contribute to
water filtration, pickling, tanning, and medical procedures and in skin care
products as an aftershave or deodorant. In addition, by reason of its eye-catching
crystal appearance, potassium alum has started to become popular amongst
mineral collectors. Potassium alum is antimicrobial which enables it to be used
as a natural deodorant by stopping the progress of the bacteria responsible for
body odor. It is also used for medical procedures as a local astringent and
styptic.
